Race Towards a Stronger Food System - Building Cultures of Health in our Local Schools
About Rogue Valley Farm to School -- mission, goals and impact
Rogue Valley Farm to School is committed to creating an inclusive and equitable food system that honors diversity. We do this by educating children about our food system through hands-on farm and garden programs and by working with schools to increase the amount of local food served in school meals. We are committed to cultivating healthier children and to helping the entire community work together to ensure all children have access to healthy, fresh food.
Rogue Valley Farm to School (RVF2S) has become a leader of farm to school education in the state, serving as Southern Oregon’s regional hub in Farm to School and School Garden education, as well as in the regional hub for procuring local food from local farmers to be served in school meals. Currently, Rogue Valley Farm to School provides procurement support to eight school districts in Southern Oregon, helping to develop funding streams to purchase local food, connecting schools to farmers and increasing the amount of healthy food in local school meals. Rogue Valley Farm to School's education and procurement programs serve more than 6,000 students annually.
We work in partnership with schools to build a culture of health, providing weekly garden education programs, monthly Tasting Tables of fresh fruits and vegetables, teacher professional development workshops to use the garden and nutrition across the curriculum, and providing on-farm field trips where children harvest food and prepare a meal together. Our goal is to build a foundation of love for healthy food and a commitment to healthy choices that can serve children throughout their lives.
Event Description: The Siskiyou Challenge - a 46 mile multisport race
The Siskiyou Challenge brings together more than 50 businesses/community partners, as well as 400 athletes, 100 volunteers and hundreds of spectators to create a fantastic community event that celebrates health and wellness. Athletes compete as soloists or in teams as large as six.
Based in Ashland, Oregon, each of the six legs of the Siskiyou Challenge features a different sport -- starting with a 13K cycle from ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum out to Emigrant Lake, then transitioning into a 3K kayak across the lake and back, then back onto bikes for a 30K Cycle through farmland, downtown Ashland and up to the swimming reservoir. From there athletes hop off their bikes for a 6K trail run up through the forests, then jump on mountain bikes for a 13K Mountain bike race through the steep watershed. Finally, the athletes complete their challenge with a 6K run back to the science museum, where a delicious, organic meal of farm-fresh food by Fry Family Farm awaits them, along with family and friends and great music at the Health, Wellness and Outdoor Adventure Expo.
It is a fantastic community celebration of health and wellness, with many of the business sponsors telling us they initially sponsor because they love the cause -- raising funds to build cultures of health in our schools -- and later realize that as sponsors, they love what it does for their employees as well.
The Siskiyou Challenge showcases the community spirit and unique outdoor recreational opportunities that Ashland and Jackson County have to offer, while at the same time providing support for Rogue Valley Farm to School a local 501(c)(3) non-profit that educates children about our food system through hands-on farm and garden programs throughout Southern Oregon.
We would like to invite you to partner with us in building a culture of health in Rogue Valley schools.
